CHILDREN VS ADULTS: WHY SUPPLEMENTS, DOSAGES & EFFECTS CAN BE DIFFERENT
A vitamin or supplement that is appropriate for an adult is not automatically appropriate for a child.

For our purposes, 18 is a useful practical dividing line, but it should not be interpreted as:
“At 18, every supplement suddenly becomes safe.”
An 18-year-old can still have individual nutritional requirements, medical conditions, medications or deficiencies that affect which supplements are appropriate.
Similarly, a 17-year-old should not automatically receive an adult supplement simply because they are close to 18.
Age, body size, development, diet, health status, medications and the specific nutrient or supplement all matter.
One more important point
Legal adulthood and biological maturity are not exactly the same thing.
The AAP notes that some aspects of brain development continue into the mid-20s, while the transition to adult healthcare is generally planned around the late teenage years and early adulthood.

The same absolute amount given to a much smaller child could represent a substantially larger amount relative to body weight.
But there is an important point:
You should not simply calculate an adult supplement dose by dividing it according to a child’s weight.
Nutrient requirements are established according to age and other factors, not simply by taking an adult dose and shrinking it.
